Born and bred in Whitby North Yorkshire Sim started collecting raw Jet as a young lad, long days out where spent looking for Jet and fossils, walking the dog and generally beach combing along the beautiful rugged North Yorkshire coast. Happy days.
He's been making Jet jewellery for over 35 years, and although it seems second nature now it took many years a lot of patience to learn the craft and become skilled at working with jet, rediscovering old techniques and making one or two new ones on the way.
The learning process is on-going.
He takes great pride in being one of only a handful of people left working locally gathered Whitby jet in the area while also upholding an old family tradition, his Great Grandfather Henry Simpson was also a Jet jewellery maker and is recorded in a census of Whitby Jet workers in 1899.
